After the blog hack last week I decided to upgrade Wordpress to the latest version. There were two reasons to do this, firstly it made me feel more comfortable to overwrite the php files with all new versions and re-install all my plug ins (paranoid I know).
Secondly I’d used the latest version on my new blog I’ve launched for bargain hunting and vouchers etc. I really like the new admin console with the latest version so I was very eager to get it running here too.
The upgrade was fairly painless, mostly it was just a case of backup up the old one, deleting all the files, uploading and running the upgrade and then copying back my theme and plug ins. One really nice feature of the new admin console is that it tells you if a new version of your plug in is available and indeed several of my plugins were out of date. I also added a new social bookmarking plugin that I’d used over on the other blog.
I only had one real problem with the upgrade and that was the text has seemed to corrupt on many of the posts. This was down to some new options for character set in the wp-config.php file. Once I removed those options, the problems went away, you can see a more on the cause of this issue here.
I’m glad I did the upgrade now, I know that on the face of it everything looks the same, but I feel like the site has a good clean out. If you see any problems at all anywhere, please let me know by commenting here.

Hi Steve,
Do you have problems running these latest versions of Wordpress on your local machine, thats if you tried installing WP on a local maching running WAMP.
Because, I have wamp on my windows xp machine, and everytime I view my wordpress page, apache crashes for no reason. It’ll come as “http stopped responding and needs to close….”.
I have tried with both php4 and php5.
Does some apache/php modules have compatibility problems with wordpress(2+)

Hi,
I’m afraid I’ve never tried to test it on a local machine so I’ve not come across any of the problems your having.
I can tell you my host php is 4.4.2-1build1 and MySQL is 5.0.22-0.
I’ve not had any issues with any version of wordpress, right up to 2.6, although I haven’t yet put 2.6 on this blog.
Sorry I can’t be more help, perhaps someone else reading might have more experience with it.
